Hello and welcome to 2021.
What have you planned for this year? Every day we decide what to do from the moment we wake up or even days in advance -we decide to visit a friend, do the laundry, go on a vacation, read a book or just rest. Whatever it is, we put in deliberate effort in that moment of deciding so we can get a certain desired result.
As Parents, we do the same thing in our parenting journey. We decide daily, minute by minute what is best for our kids to know or do or eat, we decide on their meals, schools, extra-curricular activities etc. We try as much as possible to make the best plans for them but sometimes we get tired when we don’t see the desired result, when this happens we are tempted to give up (or we actually do!)
The question you need to ask yourself is what is my family discipleship going to look like this year? Is it going to be left to chance or is it going to involve deliberate and intentional steps? Your answer to this question will help you frame a new plan for your kids.
As I thought of 2020 and what our parenting journey looked like, I can openly admit that it wasn’t all rosy, far from it. In between juggling virtual learning, working from home, online church, sibling rivalry, staying indoors, boredom and every other thing you can think of, we were tempted to give up many times on creating time to intentionally disciple our kids. Yet God’s grace was more than sufficient for us.
I am sure you had your fair share of challenges in all areas too, but as you plan and dream about this new year, the question you need to ask yourself is what is my family discipleship going to look like this year? Is it going to be left to chance or is it going to involve deliberate and intentional steps? Your answer to this question will help you frame a new plan for your kids.
So as you write those goals and plans for 2021, make sure you include a new plan for your family discipleship. It doesn’t have to be anything grand, it could be an improvement on what you already had last year or introducing something entirely new. It could range from buying a new age-appropriate Bible because your child has outgrown the previous one, or buying a new devotional for your kids that you can read as a family. It could be introducing a daily family prayer time or challenging your child to memorise scriptures. Whatever it is, make a deliberate decision about it and put things in place so you can see your child growing deeper in their knowledge of God this year.
May the GRACE of our LORD Jesus Christ be with you and your family this year. Happy new year!
