Give Thanks!

Posted by Funke Awojide

Hello November! We are still here, despite how unpredictable this year has been. We have had time to rethink our priorities and adjust where needed. This year has brought so many challenges that has made it so easy for us to doubt if God loves the world as much as He claimed and if He is really in control.

Yet if we look beyond the dark days we may have had and look more keenly at all God has done behind the scenes we will be able to see how good God has been to us. Psalm 136 starts with these words “give thanks to the Lord for He is good, His faithful love endures forever!” This Psalm shows us how God rescued His chosen people from the hand of Pharaoh, it must have been hard for them to see and acknowledge the goodness of God in those difficult times. Just like them, we may have faced hard times and stared hopelessly at the future but the Bible reassures us that God is good and His faithful love endures forever.

When we teach our kids to give thanks to God daily whether it’s over a meal, or for a good night rest, or for keeping them safe, we are helping them see that God is the one in charge and their dependence should be on Him.

When we teach our kids to give thanks to God daily whether it’s over a meal, or for a good night rest, or for keeping them safe, we are helping them see that God is the one in charge and their dependence should be on Him. We are helping them know that it isn’t Mummy and Daddy that is making those things happen, it’s God working it all out. As a parent, we love to hear our children say thank you when we give them a cup of water or help them with a difficult task, in fact if they forget to say those three words we call them back and ask “what do you say to Mummy”? Just as we love to hear them say thank you, God loves to hear them say thank you too.

Look to Him who made the sun to rule by day and the moon and the stars to rule by night (Psalm 136:4-9). Give thanks to the One who sent His Son to die for us even while we were sinners (Romas 5:8) so we could have a relationship with Him free of guilt and condemnation and enjoy live with Him forever more! Amen!

Giving thanks to God as a family this month may not come easily, but we want to encourage you and your kids to shift your gaze away from yourselves and your circumstances to the One who gives breathe your nostrils, the One who has the whole world in His hands. He is the One who does great miracles, whose wisdom made the great skies and spread out the earth on the seas. Amen!
